[What I look like when I'm genuinley working from bed]
How to get out of your own way, a 101 class on how not procrastinate, and who better to teach you then someone who is working on it herself. With the new year, people usually make the mistake of making all these outrages plans for the new year. Like drop down 4 sizes, become vegan, get 5k new followers on instagram. I mean all these things are great in theory, but lets take a second and get back to reality. We all have busy schedules that sometimes we aren't completely in control of. Whether its visiting family, running an errand for the bf/gf, trying to meal prep but still go out for drinks with the girls. It can ALL be a bit overwhelming sometimes. Here are a few things that will help you get a better handle on that. Lets start off with the simple things.
1. Control the controllable.
Do yourself a favor, focus on what you and only you can control. If you woke up late to go to the gym thats your fault, you shouldn't be up binge watching mind hunters. Be more aware of what you are putting into each equation.
2.Don't go into each scenery expecting the worse
I always feel like no expectation is the best expectation. I say this because when you expect the worse, and sometimes you get just that, the worse. What you put out into the universe is exactly what you tend to get.
3. Just Start
Sometimes we have a tendency to want everything to be perfect, and I know I am totally guilty of that myself. But what we need to remember is to just start! Perfection comes after we have already done the deed a few times. We can perfect as we go along. But as long as it's done and out there in the public, we can at least say we started and we tried!
4. This is being split up because it depends on your personality
a. Tell a friend your plan.
I say this because for some people keeping a plan in your head is easier because you have no one on your shoulder nagging you about what you have and haven't done. They will make sure that you are on top of your shit at all times, no matter what. Trust I have one of those and it can be very helpful in some cases, but sometimes I need b.
b. Keep your head low and pick brains
Sometimes we have an idea for something and we either don't want someone else to steal the idea or its something you are still figuring out and need time to flesh it out. With this its about using time wisely and figuring out all the key components of this idea. But just make sure to make a plan and execute it.
5. One thing at a time
Sometimes, especially as a creative, our mind can sometimes go a mile a minute and we have a million different ideas. Its always smart to do one thing at a time, because if we are working on too many things at once, it tends to not come out as we had visioned it in our head. So slow it down guys!
6. Watch who you surround yourself with
We don't think so much about this one and how it can affect us. Sometimes your friends can be sabotaging you and neither one of you even know it. I say this because for some people/friends its all about the good times [drinking, hanging out, and smoking]. In actually they can sometimes stop you from being greater by taking away rather than adding to your plate. So make sure to have people around you who want the best for you and can push and challenge you.
7. Be consistent
This is probably THE HARDEST thing to do. Trust me because I am still struggling with it myself. But once you get into the swing of things than it should be easier. You have to commit to certain days and having it written down in your phone/calendar makes it easier to commit as well.
8. Remember why you're doing it
We all tend to drag our feet when we have parts of our project that we hate doing. Mine tends to be editing videos [Figuring out the right timing for everything drives me nuts]. So what we tend to do is leave it to be dealt with at another time. When we do that, it gets pushed so far away, that we forgot why we started it to begin with. Just go back to where it all began and remind yourself what the final purpose of the project was.
9. When you get frustrated, just take a walk around the block
Sometimes we have some parts that can be harder than others, but when we get frustrated we just need to take a walk. I tend to focus on something else that is due, so that way when I come back I have a fresh mind and feel better about finishing something else. It tends to motivate me more to get the ish done!
10. Comparison is the death of joy
Now once you have done everything or are even in the beginning phases of something the key thing you don't want to do is COMPARE. Lordt do we all get intimidated when we start comparing to someone who has been doing this for 15+ years or someone who has a different mind set then us. Don't think about it as a bad thing or something to be discouraged about, because people come to you for a reason. I always try to remind myself that. You have your own story and your own view point. It won't match up or align with someone else's but I guarantee you, its still going to be good. And sometimes that good is better than the person you were comparing yourself to. But you won't always know it until you just look at yours for what its, amazing!
I hope these were some helpful tips! Please let me know what you guys have issues with and are working on yourself!
