Yes you've read that correct! Lets look at this man, Mr.Kanye West, if you are not in love with this man, his music, or his fashion, one thing is for sure, you were at some point! We can all agree that this man is about a wow factor and doesn't hold anything back for ANYONE!
I watched this mini documentary on the Kanye West Story, a composition of interviews with some of the most respected writers in the industry. They go through his major life challenges and how he has grown from it.
When Kanye West first entered the scene, for me he was very grounded but also told a very vivid story of his upbringing and who he was as a person. From day one he talked about traveling and fashion, so it should be to no surprise he would continue in that same direction. Yet he now talks about it in the larger scale because he's privileged to be around some of the most respected artists in the industry. What I love most about this man is that he doesn't box himself in like many other artists do. Some musicians go into acting but choose not to learn more about the craft, some actors want to be singers but don't inspire their audience. Can we say the same about Kanye?
From the documentary we know he's always been over the top and had a lot of self love [which I know many of us wish we could possess, including myself]. Kanye talks about himself and how he can't be defeated. While it may be a little on the crazy and eccentric side, we should all have a little more of that Kanye inside of us. He compares his works to some of the best and while some of us think it's ludicrous, it's pretty genius. When you are already putting yourself on the platter with some of the greats, over time, people can't do anything but begin to accept it and believe it for themselves. While making a name for himself, he's left open for criticism from the public because of how he exploit himself.
What's so beautiful about this man's thought process is how he wants to show everyone what the world could be, if we lived more on the right side of our brains. Forget the crazy rants and mean mugging that he does almost on a regular basis, but let's look at what he wants. This man put in $53 billion dollars of his own money to make his sneaker line go off without a hitch. He got wind that the sneaker was not attainable for his core audience, so he lowered the prices for them. This is usually a big faux pas because it cuts back on the possible profit that could be made. Who was the last person/designer you know who decided to lower prices, so that everyone could purchase it? This man also has lines for days to help people get through life and certain circumstances. A few of my favorites, "Most people are slowed down by the perception of themselves. If you are taught you can't do anything, you won't do anything. I was taught I can do everything." or "It's crazy that we live in a world where if you are super positive and super creative ...it's scary. Because what does that tell you about the mentality of most people if you're scared of like...positivity.". Who wouldn't want to sit down and think to themselves "hmm maybe I need to be Kanye".
Kanye decided to take his craft and expand it in all realms of life. When we listen to his music we know it will be amazing beats, some thought provoking and catchy lyrics, a hint of crazy, an ounce of nonsense, and we can't forget the rants, but in the end it's like art, everyone will see it differently. When you are always being criticized and told you can't do something, some adults will walk away and give up, while artists like Ye will say, let me have a go at it. But what makes it all such a good story, is that he not only overcomes it, but a good 90% of the time, he surpasses it and leaves people wondering how.
I don't want to rant myself but, I think Kanye will forever be the "bad guy" to a lot of people, because he doesn't care to hold back what comes so natural to him, and I've accepted that. But I would love to be able to behold the craft of being a living artist.
