Growing up Haitian wasn't the thing to be. If you were, be prepared to be made fun of. However what I never understood was, why? Have you been to Haiti? Have you seen my people? The line "wow your Haitian? you're pretty for a Haitian!". 😑 really? We don't come in one shade, we don't have a look but the way we carry ourselves, now that is something else. That is beauty within itself. We are humble, happy and prideful people. Show me a Haitian that isn't a hard worker, that isn't willing to do what they have to for their family, friends and loved ones, that doesn't exist. Did I forget to mention we are also the first country to overcome slavery, yet no one ever seems to really remember that?
Eight years ago we faced a horrible earthquake that people are still trying to overcome. America was so ready to give a helping hand, but like many other countries who face a natural disasters, all the attention dies down over time. Are we still trying to recover? Of course, but we aren't looking for hand outs from anyone, especially people like trump who claims we are "shithole countries", or recently GOP Lawmaker Matt Gaetz who says Haiti is filled with nothing but "sheet metal and garbage" 🧐🤔 Where sway? Last I checked, those places that were affected were the only places that were still in those conditions if not worse. And its only that way because the millions of dollars people thought they were donating to help the cause, had their money trickling down to people who were busy trying to create a plan of action while Haiti continued to fall apart. Even ten months after the quake, the conditions continued to get worse, please watch the short documentary, where it breaks down how the money was spent and what the conditions looks like, "Haiti: Where Did the Money Go".
So when you have assholes, yes assholes, like Trump and Gaetz, who talk about a country that they probably have never visited until the quake (if that), talk crap about it, its hard to listen to. Even more so, when its your country. So I will do you guys, Trump and Gaetz a favor and let you in on the beauty that is Haiti.
When people think of Haiti they seem to only visualize it as a third world country filled with poverty and famine but how beautiful my people and country are. As the first black republic and the first country in the western hemisphere to abolish slavery completely, we have gone through some rough times but we always prevail. We will continue to have our beautiful white sands that ask for you to lay all your troubles against, we will continue to dance and sing to the sweet and lively sounds of the infamous Sweet Micky, and we will continue to nourish you with fine cuisine you couldn't even fathom living without.
Haitians, like "shitthole" Africans, are all about our education. I have never known anyone to not have a parent who enforces knowledge and discipline on their children as much as Haitians. When you meet a child from Haiti, my sister and I always joke that there are old souls in Haitian kids. The way they talk to you, its not like any child, they speak in a way that shows you they are educated, curious, and wide eyed. When it comes to the food of Haiti, its a mix of everything, from their accra, lambi, and of course to their infamous soup joumou. Don't know or understand Haiti? I dare you to take a trip and discover the land that so many people claim they know, but in fact just look over. Get to see both the hardships but allure of Haiti.
This year I told my mother I wanted to give her a trip back to Haiti as her retirement gift. After everything going on and thats been said, I too have decided to go. I can't wait to share my trip with you.
Enjoy a few pictures of me as a kid in Haiti with my family
